Annual Market Update: 2023 in Review
Macro & Liquidity · · Delia Sabau
A dated review of the 2023 digital-asset market, including the year’s price recovery, institutional-market developments, exchange-traded-product discussion, and changing market leadership.
Digital-asset markets recovered materially in 2023 after the preceding year’s dislocation. The original review examined the period through price performance, spot and derivatives activity, and the changing role of Bitcoin and Ether within broader market participation.
Institutional-market infrastructure was an important theme of the year. The essay noted developments in regulated derivatives venues, custody, market access, and the attention surrounding prospective US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products.
The period also showed that market leadership can change quickly. Bitcoin dominance increased across much of the year, while interest in certain alternative networks and applications returned later in the cycle. These observations were descriptive of the period, not a forecast of future leadership.
Cross-asset correlation, liquidity, and policy expectations remained relevant to market behavior. The review treated them as context for understanding 2023 rather than as standalone signals capable of determining subsequent returns.
